Not quite. The Templar cross had equidistant arms on a larger white field. I couldn't find this symbol in any heraldic list, so it's probably just an artistic interpretation of European or English knights in general. Good thinking, though. :)
It isn't often seen, because the chain mail which supplanted it looks cooler and protects better, since it doesn't lose important parts in battle. ^^
